As the California Mercury Lamp Pollution Prevention Act takes full effect on January 2, 2025, UC’s pro-active LED initiative highlights how visionary leadership can drive meaningful environmental change. This coming January, the second tier of California Assembly Bill (AB) 2208 will take effect, prohibiting the sale or distribution of pin-base compact fluorescent lamps and linear fluorescent lamps in California. This builds upon a prior ban on screw or bayonet base compact fluorescent lamps that took effect on January 1, 2024.

Pioneering the Path to Mercury-Free Lighting

UC’s leadership in LED lighting began well before legislative mandates. In 2018, UC launched the Million LED Challenge (MLC), a groundbreaking program to transition public, governmental, and educational buildings to light-emitting diode (LED) bulbs. This initiative was created in partnership with the California Community College system, California State University system, the California Department of General Services, and the California Lighting Technology Center, and made high-quality LEDs widely available for purchase following a competitive RFP solicitation.

The benefits of LEDs go beyond energy efficiency. They emit less heat, last longer, and, most importantly, are mercury-free, eliminating the health and environmental hazards associated with fluorescent lighting.

From Problem to Progress: The Fluorescent Lighting Ban

For decades, fluorescent lighting was hailed as an energy-saving solution. However, it came with a hidden cost: mercury. One of the top 10 most dangerous chemicals to human health and the environment, mercury exposure poses serious risks when fluorescent bulbs break or are improperly discarded.

With mercury-free LEDs now available in every shape and size, there’s no need to compromise between safety and sustainability. The fluorescent lighting ban ensures that California moves forward with technology that safeguards public health and the planet.

Lighting the Way

By championing LEDs early, UC not only reduced its carbon footprint but also set a precedent for institutions across the state. Thanks to UC’s foresight and collaboration, it’s easier than ever for California to switch to safer, longer-lasting, and more sustainable lighting. With LEDs lighting the way, the future is brighter for everyone.
